All Hail IroncladSins of a Solar Empire makes no apologies for being ambitiously massive and deep. It’s the kind of project that could have easily gone awry if a single design element had not delivered. Fortunately, Ironclad Games made one right call after another.A game of such intricate scope could have easily been sunk by an inefficient interface, but SSE sports an amazing control structure that finds you hopping around the galaxy with ease, quickly commanding fleets of ships while always having quick access to pertinent information. You wouldn’t expect a strategy game of this type, made by a new company with limited budget, to sport great graphics, but once again, Ironclad has delivered beyond expectations. Visually, SSE is stunning and shows that a lot of love and care was put into every pixel. The fact that you can zoom-in on an individual scout ship and seamlessly zoom-out to a galactic view makes Supreme Commander’s zooming feature look like a joke. Add to this a great, atmospheric soundtrack and you have before you a game that delivers on every single front. Hell, Ironclad even included superb multiplayer features using their own custom network that simply works. If, like me, you’ve been depressed at the state of PC gaming over the last few years, then you now have reason to celebrate. Sins of a Solar Empire is a masterpiece and deserves all the riches that will hopefully come its way. It may not have the marketing budget it warrants, but the title is in good hands with Stardock, publisher of Galactic Civilizations. You can purchase SSE as a digital download by heading here. Alternatively, if you’re old school, then your local game dealer should have a copy sitting on store shelves. I urge you to make the plunge and come experience what is easily the strategy game of the year…and if it isn’t? We’re in for one amazing year.Kudos to everyone involved. Your labor of love is now a game I worship.
